ELEVEN election areas of concern (EAC) have been identified in the province of Basilan, the military’s Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) said, adding contingency measures are in place to address potential threats.
“The elections are a vital part of our democracy,” said Westmincom commander Lt. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete during a visit at the headquarters of the 101st Brigade in Isabela City, Basilan.
“We must protect the process and ensure that our communities can vote in peace. We must stay focused, impartial, and fully prepared until the entire electoral process is complete,” he also said.
Brig. Gen. Alvin Luzon, 101st Brigade commander, presented to Nafarette the brigade’s comprehensive security and contingency plans for this year’s elections.
In a statement, Westmincom said these plans “outline detailed preparations aimed at mitigating potential threats and responding promptly to election-related incidents.”
Westmincom said there are 11 EACs in Basilan which is under the operational control of the 101st Brigade – two red category, eight orange category, and one yellow category.
“These EACs have a history of election-related violence and are currently being prioritized for additional security and monitoring,” it said.
It also said additional troops will be deployed to Basilan, Lanao provinces and in central Mindanao “to reinforce security operations and ensure a strong security presence in critical areas throughout the region.”
“With the commitment of all units and continuous coordination across task forces, Westmincom remains steadfast in its mission to provide a safe and orderly electoral process across western and central Mindanao,” it added.
