ELECTION violence reared its ugly head in Tayum, Abra last Monday afternoon, leaving one person dead and another injured in a clash between supporters of local candidates.
A report from the Tayum police station said mayoral candidate Kathlia Cariño Alcantara, whose convoy figured in the shooting, reported the incident.
“(She) reported to this station that they were fired upon,” the report said of Alcantara (of Asenso Party), who is running against re-electionist Mayor Placido Eduarte Jr. of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats or Lakas-CMD.
But police investigation showed that the convoy of Alcantara fired at the convoy of Walter Tugadi, who is running for councilor under the Lakas-CMD.
It said Jordan Barcena, a member of the Tugadi convoy who was injured in the incident, identified Ryan Luna and Raffy Tejero “as part of the shooters on board one of the vehicles of Alcantara.”
Tejero is also running for councilor under the Asenso Party while Luna is a barangay captain.
