The PNP has deployed additional personnel at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport after a molotov bomb went off at the airport’s parking lot last Sunday, damaging three vehicles.

In a press briefing at the PNP national headquarters at Camp Crame, PNP spokeswoman Col. Jean Fajardo also sought to downplay the terrorism angle in the attack.

Reports said the molotov bomb was lobbed at the parking lot from outside the airport premises on Sunday morning. No one was hurt but the fire it caused damaged three vehicles.

Fajardo said the PNP is not taking lightly the incident “considering the airport is a vital installation.”

“That’s the reason why we added security personnel inside and outside the airport, of course in coordination with the airport management,” said Fajardo, adding the deployment is meant to ensure the safety of passengers.

“We really have to make sure that there won’t be a repeat (of this incident), that’s why we added personnel there, including EOD (Explosive and Ordnance and Disposal) and K9 personnel,” she said.

As to the motive, Fajardo said it was “very remote (that) this is a terrorism-related incident.”

Citing initial result of investigation, Fajardo said the blast was “not really meant to harm people.”

She said investigators are looking into the possible involvement of a group of disgruntled workers who might be involved in the attack.

“Some were already questioned, and we are looking at the involvement (of other people) so let us allow the investigation to proceed,” said Fajardo.
