On her 53rd birthday last Wednesday, February 14, former actress-host Kris Aquino provided an update on her health condition during an appearance on “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda.” Kris, known for her candor, opened up about her battle with five autoimmune diseases, including Eosinophilic Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (EGPA), which has taken a toll on her other organs, including her lungs and heart. Kris revealed that she has developed several allergies to medications and that exposure to seemingly innocuous grass and inhalation of unfiltered air may lead to a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. Enjoying her bath can sometimes cause her blood pressure to spike, she also said.

Kris asked for continued prayers from her supporters, most especially as she is scheduled to undergo an experimental and risky therapy aimed at managing her condition. “On Monday, papasok ako sa hospital at may susubukan kaming biological na gamot. This is my chance, but to save my heart, because kung hindi ito tumalab, Boy, I stand a very strong chance of having cardiac arrest, pwedeng in my sleep or kung ano man ang ginagawa ko, pwedeng tumigil na lang ‘yung pagtibok ng puso. So may gamot na susubukan, but there’s a very big risk involved with that medicine because hindi binibigay ang gamot na to na hindi ka binibigyan muna ng steroids. You need it para hindi ka magkaroon ng anaphylactic shock.”

Despite the challenges posed by her health condition, Kris said she will continue to fight for her health for her two children, Joshua and Bimby.

“I have been very, very upfront and honest at hinarap ko na to because alam ko na bawat araw, especially now birthday ko pa, pahiram na lang to ng Diyos. Binigyan ako ng bonus so whatever days are left, kung ano man ang natitira, it’s a blessing. But i really want to stay alive, I mean, sino ba naman ang sasabihin na handa na akong mamatay? I don’t think any of us can say that because I made a promise to Bimb na until he becomes an adult, I will really do everything, lahat gagawin ko kasi hindi naman sikreto sa mga tao that ang kuya [Joshua] niya falls under the autism spectrum. Ako lang ang nagpalaki dun sa dalawa. Kailangan pa nila ako,” said Kris. Should anything happen to her, Kris has already gotten the assurance of her sisters and a few friends, including Abunda, that they will take care of her sons. “I love you so much and I’m entrusting them with you, because in two weeks, they will actually be going home. Why did I decide on this? Because naawa ako dun sa dalawang bata, kasi ako, makukulong na ako sa bahay. Pupunta na lang ako at lalabas ako para makita ‘yung mga doktor.” She was keeping her spirits up in spite of the dire report. She said she is thankful to supporters who continue to send her food and gifts and to friends who take time to visit her in the United States. Towards the end of the interview, she congratulated Boy on his new contract with GMA and joked, “Sa’yo na ako mangungumisyon.”

She also revealed her sister Viel wanted to make sure she looked good for the TV interview and confirmed Bimby’s entry to showbiz with a quip.

“Would you believe my sister Viel, said I hope may nag ayos sa’yo. I hope bihis kang okay dahil ayoko na kaawaan ka ng mga tao at ayokong matakot sila na hindi ilibing ka na. No, I refuse to die.

“My next chapter is to become a stage mother,” she added.

Kris has been absent from the limelight for more than three years. In 2022, she made the decision to seek treatment in Houston, Texas, where she underwent experimental therapies aimed at managing her condition.
