BUTUAN gave title favorite Zamboanga City Chooks fits, but Fil-Am forward Joshua Munzon proved anew that he is the country’s top 3×3 player.

With Munzon coming up big down the stretch, Family’s Brand Sardines held off the Uling Roasters 21-17 last Wednesday to bag the crown in the first leg of the 2020 Chooks-to-Go President’s Cup at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna.

The 6-foot-3 Munzon led the way with 12 points, while Alvin Pasaol chipped in six markers as Zamboanga City scored a fitting follow-up to its preseason title win and bagged P100,000.

“Again, it showed we can fight through adversity,” Munzon said after the final of the tourney’s first leg energized by hydration partner Gatorade.

The second leg of the FIBA 3×3-endorsed tournament gets going today at the same venue.

“We just stuck to our script. We took advantage of our advantages,” he added.

Butuan led 17-14 with three minutes left but the 6-foot-3 Munzon took over and scored four of Zamboanga City’s last seven points.

A Munzon deuce touched off Family’s Brand Sardines’ telling 7-0 blitz to pull the rug from under the Uling Roasters.

Munzon’s free throw sealed the deal for Zamboanga City.

Karl Dehesa paced Butuan with six points, while Chris De Chavez and PBA veteran Chico Lanete added six and four, respectively as the Uling Roasters took home P100,000.
