THE Armed Forces awarded medals to two military dogs for their contribution to the continuing campaign against the New People’s Army (NPA).
Lt. Gen. Benedict Arevalo, commander of the AFP Visayas Command, conferred the Military Working Dog Achievement Medal during a visit to the headquarters of the 302nd Brigade in Negros Oriental last Tuesday.
The dogs, named Mugie and Puti, were given the award for “major role” during the conduct of pursuit operations against NPA rebels in the Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental last August 26.
The dogs were instrumental in the discovery of an NPA rebel during the pursuit operation.
An M16 rifle, four anti-personnel mines and rebel documents were also found.
“Mugie and Puti are not just dogs, they are soldiers. Like any other soldier, they too deserve to be recognized for their significant contributions,” said Arevalo.
“They manifest a high sense of loyalty and dedication to duty. When needed, they too would be willing to offer the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our country and people,” Arevalo added.
During the same visit at the 302nd headquarters and 303rd Brigade in Negros Occidental last Monday, Arevalo also conferred the Gold Cross Medal and Silver Cross Medal to 66 soldiers for feats against NPA rebels.
“In Team Viscom, every member of our fighting force is an integral part of the organization.
As such, it is imperative to recognize and honor every member’s untiring effort and selfless sacrifice to ensure that peace will reign and the democratic way of life is sustained throughout the Visayas region,” said Arevalo.
Arevalo urged soldiers to sustain the campaign against the insurgents.
“We have achieved significant gains in our campaign against the CPP-NPA. We have delivered devastating blows and caused irreparable damage to the terrorist group,” said Arevalo.
