Lala Sotto, the chairperson of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB), has become the focus of online attacks, prompting a response from the regulatory body.

In a statement released yesterday, the MTRCB expressed concern over the surge in online threats directed at Sotto. These threats have flooded the official social media pages of the agency, raising concerns regarding Sotto’s safety and security.

MTRCB Vice Chairman Njel De Mesa voiced his support for Sotto, saying, “No Filipino deserves such personal attacks. We must not resort to personal attacks because our agency is just doing its mandate. We are happy that our Chair is active in discharging the functions of our office based on existing laws.”

Echoing these sentiments, MTRCB Executive Director II Atty. Mamarico Sansarona Jr. emphasized that personal attacks have no place in constructive discourse. “While the MTRCB recognizes the importance of constructive criticism and open dialogue, it condemns any form of threats, harassment, or violence, both online and offline,” he said. “Such behavior is not only illegal but also runs counter to the principles of a Filipino value-based media and entertainment culture that the MTRCB upholds.”

The MTRCB also reaffirmed its commitment to its mission of ensuring that television and movie content aligns with the cultural values and norms of the Philippines. It continues to encourage dialog with the public, emphasizing the importance of civil discourse and responsible criticism.
