MAYOR Isko Moreno yesterday ordered barangay executives and local police to start charging and arresting “irresponsible” parents who neglect and let their children roam the Manila’s streets, especially during nighttime, amid the continuing threat of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Moreno said he has received reports that law enforcers and barangay leaders have picked up a high numbers of minors who were caught violating the city’s curfew and health regulations. Curfew hours in Manila are from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
“Let’s start jailing irresponsible parents. I dont mind kung mapuno ang ating kulungan ng mga pabayang magulang (I don’t mind if our detention centers get filled up with irresponsible parents) for violation of City Ordinance 8243 or the Anti-Child Endangerment Ordinance,” Moreno said.
“Hard times require hard decisions para mapigilan ang pagkalat ng COVID-19 (so we can control the spread of COVID-19),” Moreno added.
The Manila City police on Monday reported it has arrested 9,367 minors for curfew violations and 1,039 for not wearing of facemasks in public places.
Moreno said he has directed MPD Director Brig. General Rolando Miranda and the city social welfare department headed by its director Re Fugoso to start filing cases against the parents of the arrested minors.
