THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority yesterday launched a program meant to tap the community in cleaning their own surroundings instead of just relying on the local government units and the agency.

The program dubbed, “Bayanihan sa Barangay,” was launched in Pasay City, specifically in barangays 127, 128, 129, 130, 131, and 132.

MMDA chairperson Romando Cortes said services like drainage de-clogging, clean-up of waterways, trimming and pruning of trees, sidewalk clearing operations, painting of pedestrian lane, misting, one-stop shop query service for settling of violations and repair of perimeter fences along esteros were conducted by the MMDA personnel from different offices such as Flood Control and Sewerage Management Office, Health, Public Safety and Environmental Protection Office, Sidewalk Clearing Operations Group, and Traffic Engineering Center in the said barangays.

“The Bayanihan sa Barangay is a revitalized project of the agency focused on cleaning waterways and drainage systems,” Artes said in brief remarks during the program’s launching.

“This project is a form of participatory governance where we pool our resources to address problems in a specific area with a goal to bring forth cleaner and orderly communities and healthier Metro Manila residents,” he added.

He said the program will also tap the support of residents to help the agency, thereby empowering them to take a more active role in their communities.

Pasay City Mayor Imelda “Emi” Calixto-Rubiano expressed her gratitude to the MMDA for mounting the project as she vowed the city government’s full support.
