AS proof of its intensified crackdown against traffic obstructions, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority yesterday said its operatives have arrested more than 2,000 violators while over 700 vehicles have been impounded in January alone.

MMDA Chair Romando Artes said 2,778 were apprehended for illegal parking and other traffic violations, 2,532 were issued traffic citation tickets, 770 motor vehicles were impounded, and 776 illegally parked vehicles were towed last month.

“This proves our seriousness in our clearing operations on our sidewalks, Mabuhay Lanes and major roadways in Metro Manila,” he said.

The penalty for unattended illegally parked vehicles is P1,000 while attended yet illegally parked vehicles will be fined P2,000.

Artes reiterated his appeal to the public to cooperate in the agency’s efforts to rid roadways of obstructions that impede the flow of traffic.

He also called on local officials, especially at the barangay level, to ensure obstruction-free roadways in their jurisdictions.

The MMDA had joined hands with the Department of the Interior and Local Government and the National Capital Region Police Office to sustain the agency’s clearing operations and keep roadways, including the Mabuhay lanes, free from traffic obstructions.
