THE Mindanao Independent Press Council Inc. (MIPC) has urged persons with information about the perpetrators in the killing of broadcaster Juan Jumalon to come forward and contribute to the pursuit of justice.
The MIPC, in a statement issued after the burial of Jumalon last Sunday, welcomed the P3.7 million reward offered to hasten identifying and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Misamis Occidental Governor Henry Oaminal Sr. has offered a P500,000 reward for anyone providing information on the suspects’ whereabouts and a P3 million reward for any law enforcement official who successfully arrests any of the individuals responsible for the murder.
The Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) and the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) have offered a P100,000 reward each for information that would lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
“We call upon the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing any relevant information that could lead to the swift arrest of the suspects. The reward money serves as a testament to the seriousness with which authorities are treating this case, and we encourage individuals with information to come forward and contribute to the pursuit of justice,” the MIPC said yesterday
The PTFoMS, in a Facebook post about the P3.7 million total reward yesterday, also urged the public to “come together to bring closure to this gruesome murder.”
The MIPC, led by its president, Edith Caduaya, expressed hope the “tragic” death of Jumalon would be the last and that justice would be served without delay.
“As we mourn the loss of Mr. Jumalon, we reiterate the importance of prioritizing media safety and fostering an environment where journalists can carry out their work without fear of violence or reprisals. We stand united in our commitment to upholding press freedom and protecting those who play a crucial role in the fabric of our society,” the statement added.
Jumalon was on a live broadcast when a gunman entered the radio booth inside his home in Calamba, Misamis Occidental and shot him twice last week.
