Military: NPA to pay for death of 6 soldiers

THE Armed Forces yesterday vowed to avenge the death of six soldiers in Borongan City in Eastern Samar on Monday afternoon.

The six soldiers from the Army’s 14th Infantry Battalion died from six bombs detonated by the New People’s Army during a clash in Barangay Pinanag-an. Twenty other soldiers were wounded while the NPA had one fatality.

“We commit to run after the perpetrators of this treacherous affront to our troops out to protect our people’s democratic way of life and make those criminals pay for their actions,” said AFP spokesman Brig. Gen. Edgard Arevalo.

The soldiers were sent to Barangay Pinanag-an to check reports about the presence of NPA reported to be engaged in extortion activities.

The Army’s 8th Infantry Division based in Samar yesterday named the slain soldiers as Sgt. Rex Jadulco, Corporals Ronaldo Go and Limar Banug, Privates First Class Kent Loyd Agullo and Junmar Buranday, and Private Charlie del Rosario.

Arevalo called the NPA act a “hopeless bid to project strength.”

He said the rebels will resort to all means to inflict casualties on government troops, even those who are merely responding to “distress calls.”

Arevalo said Armed Forces chief Gen. Noel Clement has expressed the military’s condolences to the families of the fatalities, ordered the delivery of all benefits due the widows and orphans, and benefits to the families of the wounded.

Communist leader Jose Maria Sison, who has been on self-exile in the Netherlands since the late 80s, has congratulated the NPA rebels who figured in the firefight.
