THERE is no halting Metro Manila’s garbage contracts, COVID-19 or no COVID-19.

Despite travel restrictions and months-long immobilization of commercial activities in the first year of the pandemic, the National Capital Region’s (NCR) payment to trash haulers rose to P7.476 billion in 2020 — a 14 percent hike from P6.56 billion in 2019.

Quezon City, Metro Manila’s biggest city in terms of area and population, topped the list, coughing up P1.945 billion — up 17 percent from only P1.661 billion in the preceding year.

Manila’s share of the pie totaled P769.457 million, a whopping 67 percent increase from P459.9 million the year before the pandemic.

Caloocan City stood in third place, paying P742.144 million in 2020 compared to P671.33 million in 2019 for an uptick of 10 percent.

The expense item was listed under each local government unit’s Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE) under “Environment/Sanitary Services.”
