FROM 49, the barangays of Bacoor, Cavite will now be down to only 23, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced yesterday after residents approved the proposal to merge and rename their barangays in the plebiscite conducted last Saturday.

“The constituents voted ‘yes’ to ratify the merging of 44 barangays into 18 barangays as well as to rename five other barangays as a result of the merging,” the Comelec said in a statement.

Based on the complete and official canvass of the Bacoor City Plebiscite Board of Canvassers (CPBOC), 90.44 percent of the voters, or 29,285 residents, voted “yes” to the merging and renaming of barangays based on Bacoor City Ordinance No. 275-2023.

On the other hand, merely 9.25 percent, or 2,994 voters, opted to vote “no.”

The Bacoor plebiscite had 32,380 actual voters out of the 114,416 registered voters, for a low voter turnout of 28.30 percent.

Asked why there were only a few voters who participated in the electoral exercise, Comelec chairman George Garcia said it was likely due to low interest in the plebiscite.

“(It is) always in the lack of interest,” said the poll chief, but quickly added that the low voter turnout does not mean that the plebiscite was unsuccessful.

“Regardless as to whether the turnout was high or low, what is important is that the electoral exercise was peaceful and credible,”
