AS the modified enhanced general community ended in Metro Manila and four nearby areas yesterday, the Department of Health reported 4,836 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases, raising the total to 169,213, remaining as the worst-case country in Southeast Asia.
In its latest bulletin, the DOH said of the new cases, majority (2,959) came from the National Capital Region, followed by Laguna (321), Cavite (220), Rizal (185), and Bulacan (145).
Seven more deaths were reported, raising the number of fatalities to 2,687, while there were 182 new recoveries, meaning the number of survivors has risen to 112,861.
Two of the deaths were reported in Calabarzon while Central Luzon, Bicol Region, Central Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Davao Region had one each.
Globally, as of August 17, there were 21,549,706 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 767,158 deaths, according to the World Health Organization.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said 25 more overseas Filipinos have been infected with COVID-19, bringing the total number to 9,933.
The new cases and 16 new recoveries were all recorded in the Middle East/Africa and the Asia-Pacific regions. The DFA said the number of overseas Filipinos who have recovered now stands at 5, 860.
For the second day in a row, no overseas Filipinos succumbed to the virus.
The Middle East/Africa remains the region with the most number of confirmed COVID cases with 6,906, recoveries at 4, 123 and fatalities at 445.
Europe came in next in terms of cases at 1,146, followed by the Asia-Pacific region with 1,090 cases and the Americas with 791. — With Ashzel Hachero
