Measles up by nearly 200%

MEASLES cases continue to grow when, based on data of the Department of Health (DOH).

In its Measles Surveillance Report, the DOH said 462 measles cases were reported from January 1 to October 15, or 191 percent higher compared to the 159 measles cases reported for the same period as last year.

Regions with the highest number of cases are Calabarzon with 86, followed by Central Visayas with 64, and National Capital Region with 57.

Registering the highest increase from the previous year are Central Visayas at 1,180 percent (5 to 64 cases), Mimaropa 950 percent (2 to 21), and Central Luzon at 278 percent (9 to 34).

One death due to measles has so far been reported for 2022. No death was reported during the same period as last year.

Last month, the DOH said all 17 regions in the country are considered at high risk for a measles outbreak because of low immunization rate among children in recent years.

Dr Alethea de Guzman, director of the DOH Epidemiology Bureau, also noted measles outbreaks in the country usually occur every four to five years. The last was in the months bridging 2018 and 2019.
