A MEMBER of the terrorist Maute Group and two companions were arrested for illegal possession of firearms and other war materiel in Marantao town in Lanao del Sur last Tuesday.

PNP chief Rodolfo Azurin Jr. identified the Maute Group member as Mastura Disomala, 43, a former barangay chairman, and his companions as Samen Mamasao and Moca Giambal.

The three were nabbed by operatives of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and Marantao police station at around 3:45 p.m. in Barangay Palao.

The policemen, armed with a search warrant, arrested the three after recovering two M16 rifles, an M14 rifle, a 9 mm pistol, a cal. 45 pistol, a hand grenade, magazines and assorted ammunition during the search.

Azurin commended the CIDG and the Marantao police station “for a job well done.

“The armed suspects may pose threat to the communities, notwithstanding reports tagging them as local terrorists. This is a major accomplishment in our fight against insurgency and terrorism but the quest to achieve peace and order continues and we will be relentless,” said Azurin.

The Maute Group became prominent in May 2017 when it figured in the so-called Marawi City siege.

The five-month conflict resulted in the deaths of about a thousand terrorists, including Islamic State of Iraq and Syria-Southeast Asia emir Isnilon Hapilon.

Also killed in the fighting were 168 soldiers and policemen and 47 civilians.

The fighting also left massive destruction in the city. The government is still in the middle of massive rehabilitation of the city, including the construction of houses.
