PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will attend the 2023 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in the United States, Ambassador to Washington Jose Manuel Romualdez said yesterday.
The 2023 APEC summit will be held in November in San Francisco, California.
“President Marcos will be coming in November for the APEC meeting in the West Coast. I am confirming that President Marcos will be attending together with all the leaders who have been invited to APEC,” Romualdez told CNN Philippines.
Aside from meeting with heads of state of the APEC member-countries, Romualdez said, Marcos will also meet with members of the US business community to discuss possible investments in the country.
“By that time we are ready to show the economic reforms and economic programs so that they will be enticed to come to the Philippines,” Romualdez added.
Thailand hosted this year’s APEC Summit which Marcos attended.
Romualdez did not say whether Marcos will meet with US President Joe Biden in next year’s summit.
However, last month he said Marcos may have a White House meeting with Biden next year, adding discussions for a meeting are being held.
Marcos first met Biden last September on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly Session in New York, and of the APEC summit in Thailand last month.
Marcos’ presence at the UN General Assembly session in New York was his first to the US since the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit issued a contempt order in 2012 against him, his mother Imelda, and the estate of Ferdinand Marcos Sr. for violating an injunction that barred them from dissipating assets of the estate in connection with compensation claims of human rights victims during martial law.
