Marcos, Biden to meet on UNGA sidelines

PRESIDENT Marcos Jr. yesterday urged member states of the United Nations to support the Philippines’ candidature to the body’s Security Council for the term 2027-2028, as he highlighted the country’s experience in promoting peace and justice, and in “reinforcing the predictability and stability of international law.”

Speaking during the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday (New York time), the President noted the Philippines’ success in dealing with armed Muslim groups in Mindanao, which resulted in the establishment of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

Marcos said the peace attained after many decades of conflict among warring factions and clansmen in Mindanao is proof that unity is possible even “in the most trying circumstances.”

“My country’s experience in building peace and forging new paths of cooperation can enrich the work of the Security Council. And to this end I appeal for the valuable support of all UN member states for the Philippines’ candidature to the Security Council for the term of 2027-2028,” he said.

The President said a combination of inclusive dialogue with all stakeholders, patience and good faith has produced a credible and solid foundation for self-government that paves the way for lasting peace and sustainable development.

Marcos said the same approach has been used by the country in dealing with its regional neighbors.

“The Philippines builds partnerships for peace and development through dialogue, including through inter-faith and inter-religious dialogue especially through ASEAN. In the face of great diversity, we believe that partnerships form the bridge to unite all of us in promoting peace and stability in the Asia Pacific region,” he said.

The President, meanwhile, emphasized the need to reaffirm the UN’s commitment to end war, uphold justice, respect human rights, and maintain international peace and security.

Marcos also urged the UN member states to address the “scourge” of proliferation of weapons, including small arms, light weapons, or improvised explosive devices, and said nuclear weapon continues to be an “existential threat” despite efforts to prohibit its use.

After the event, the President discussed with the UN Secretary General António Guterres areas of cooperation and support, views on international situations, and the need for climate action.

The President will be in New York until September 23. He is expected to hold meetings with other world leaders and business groups like the United States-ASEAN Business Advisory Council and the US Chamber of Commerce.

Marcos has expressed hope for a meeting with US President Joe Biden.

Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles last night confirmed the meeting with Biden on the sidelines of the UNGA. She said the two leaders are expected to discuss strengthening US-PH relations and expanding trade and investment, among others.
