AFTER 17 months, the Archdiocese of Manila is set to welcome its new archbishop today, as Cardinal Jose Advincula as he is set to be installed in a solemn ceremony at the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros.

Advincula will be the 33rd Archbishop of Manila. He will succeed Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle who left for the Vatican in February 2020 after Pope Francis assigned him as prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.

On the eve of the installation, Tagle advised Advincula, “Just be who you are. You are called by the Lord to serve. You are a gift to the Archdiocese of Manila.”

“Don’t worry. You are God’s gift as you are, so be who you are. God bless,” Tagle added in his video message.

The event is set to begin at 8 a.m. when Advincula is formally welcomed to Intramuros by Manila Mayor Isko Moreno and Intramuros Administrator Guiller Asido at the Postigo Gate, which was used exclusively by the archbishops of Manila and governors general of the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era.

The Cardinal will then head towards a civic reception at the Ayuntamiento Building, which is the old city hall of Manila that now houses the Bureau of the Treasury.

He will be escorted in a procession by different Catholic orders, namely the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, and the Knights of Columbus.

There, he will be welcomed by five mayors of the cities within the Archdiocese of Manila namely, Manila, Makati, Mandaluyong, Pasay, and San Juan, and given the symbolic keys to their cities.
