Magnitude 7.1 quake hits Sultan Kudarat

A MAGNITUDE 7.1 earthquake quake struck Sultan Kudarat yesterday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

No damage was expected from the quake, Phivolcs said.

The quake occurred at 10:13 a.m. Its epicenter was some 133 km southwest of Palimbang town. It was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 722 km.

Shaking was felt at intensity IV in San Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental, and Intensity III in Mati City in Davao Oriental and Glan town in Sarangani.

Phivolcs said aftershocks are expected from the quake.

The agency initially reported the quake to be of magnitude 6.5 but later upgraded it to magnitude 7.1.

Phivolcs said there was no tsunami threat from the quake.

“No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data. This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” Phivolcs said in an advisory.
