A MAGNITUDE 6.2 earthquake rocked Davao Occidental yesterday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
In a radio interview, Phivolcs director Renato Solidum said he was not expecting damage from quake which is of tectonic in origin.
The earthquake occurred at around 7:21 a.m. Its epicenter was some 86 km southeast of Sarangani town, in Davao Occidental.
General Santos City in South Cotabato felt the shaking at Intensity V.
The towns of Kiamba, Alabel, Maasim, Glan, Malungon and Malapatan in Sarangani province; Lebak town in Sultan Kudarat; Datu Blah Sinsuat town in Maguindanao; and Koronadal City in South Cotabato experienced the quake at Intensity IV.
The quake was felt at intensities II and I in several areas in Maguindanao, Davao del Sur, North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Zamboanga City.
Solidum, at the “Laging Handa” press briefing, said the quake is not that strong to trigger a tsunami.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the General Santos City Risk Reduction and Management Office suspended work in all government offices shortly after the the quake.
The suspension was meant to “give time for the inspection of facilities and other structures due to earthquake.”
