Magnitude 5.9 quake damages schools in Bukidnon

SCHOOL buildings and other structures were reported damaged while six persons were reported injured in a magnitude 5.9 earthquake that rocked Bukidnon on Monday night, officials reported yesterday.

Assessment on the damage was ongoing, said Rosauro Arnel Gonzales Jr., director of the Office of Civil Defense-Northern Mindanao region.

Gonzales said no structure collapsed and no roads or bridges were affected.

Valencia City police chief Lt. Col. Surki Serenas said Esther Hospital in Barangay Lumbo in the city had “huge cracks” on its wall, prompting the evacuation of patients.

Serenas said two houses in Barangay Tugaya and Laligan had major damage but there was no reported death or injury.

Bukidnon provincial police spokesman Maj. Silvestre Asiong said six were reported injured in the province — five in Maramag town and one in Kadingilan.

Asiong said a number of structures, including schools and houses, were damaged by the quake in Valencia City and in the towns of Maramag, Kadingilan, and Don Carlos. He also said classes were suspended in the four areas.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake occurred around 9:22 p.m. Its epicenter was some 8 km northwest of Kadingilan town.
The quake, of tectonic in origin, had a depth of 5 km.

Phivolcs said an Intensity 6 shaking was felt in Kadingilan, Kalilangan, Don Carlos, Maramag, Kitaotao, and San Fernando in Bukidnon, and Intensity 5 in Damulog, Talakag and Valencia City, in Bukidnon; Midsayap, Cotabato; Kidapawan City; and Marawi City.
