A MAGNITUDE 5.5 earthquake rocked Isabela yesterday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
The quake occurred at 8:49 a.m. Its epicenter was some 15 km northeast of Maconacon town in Isabela.
Phivolcs initially reported the earthquake at magnitude 5.8 but later downgraded it to magnitude 5.5.
“We are expecting aftershocks,” said PAGASA director Teresito Bacolcol.
As of 3 p.m. yesterday, Phivolcs said, it has recorded 70 aftershocks, ranging from magnitude 2.3 to 4..
Bacolcol said they are not expecting damage from the quake.
“It’s deep, it’s 42 kilometers, so it’s not going to bring effect on the surface… It’s effect would not be as much as, if it’s a shallow earthquake,” he said. — Victor Reyes
