A MAGNITUDE 5.4 earthquake rocked Batanes yesterday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Aftershocks are expected from the quake, the epicenter of which was some 42 km northwest of Sabtang town in Batanes, Phivolcs said.
The quake, which occurred at around 9:43 a.m., was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 48 km.

Phivolcs said shaking was felt at Intensity V in Sabtang. The towns of Basco, Mahatao, Ivana and Uyugan, all in Batanes, experienced the shaking at Intensity IV while Itbayat, also in Batanes, felt the tremor at Intensity III.
The agency said it was not expecting damage from the quake.
