A LOW pressure area (LPA) entered the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) yesterday morning but it has a slim chance of intensifying into a tropical cyclone, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
PAGASA weather specialist Obet Badrina said the LPA, which was some 840 km east of the Visayas as of 3 p.m. yesterday, was forecast to merge with a super typhoon (international name “Bolaven”) which is outside the PAR.
Bolaven was some 2,280 km east of northern Luzon as of 3 p.m. yesterday. Badrina said Bolaven is not expected to enter PAR.
Bolaven was packing maximum sustained winds of 195 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 240 kph. It was moving north northwest ward at 25 kph.
“We are seeing a possibility that it (LPA) will just become a trough or extension of (super) typhoon Bolaven,” said Badrina.
Badrina said the LPA will bring rains to Metro Manila, Mimaropa, and Calabarzon regions, and parts of the Visayas and Mindanao.
PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja said the LPA is due to move away from landmass “and become part of the outer portion” of Bolaven.
