A LOW pressure area (LPA) off Cagayan province might intensify into a tropical depression, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services (PAGASA) said yesterday.

In an advisory issued at 11 a.m. yesterday, PAGASA said the LPA was some 450 km east of Tuguegarao City in Cagayan as of 10 a.m yesterday.

“The possibility of this weather disturbance to develop into a tropical depression is not ruled out,” PAGASA said.

If the LPA develops into a tropical depression, it will named “Maymay.”

PAGASA weather specialist Obet Badriana said based on latest data, “we are not ruling out the possibility it will develop into a (tropical storm), though the chance is small as of today,”

PAGASA is monitoring another LPA which was outside the Philippine area of responsibility as of yesterday. It was some 1,880 km east of the Eastern Visayas region and was not affecting any part of the country.

The country has had 12 tropical cyclones this year, including super typhoon “Karding” that killed 12 people and left some P3 billion worth of damage to agriculture and infrastructure.
