THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administrative (PAGASA) has monitored a low pressure area (LPA) which is expected to bring rains in the Visayas and Mindanao.

The LPA is unlikely to develop into a tropical depression in the coming days,
PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja said in a weather forecast.

Estareja said the LPA was some 1,710 km east southeast of Mindanao as of 3 a.m.

yesterday and may enter the Philippine area of responsibility tomorrow.

“Based on our analysis, it has a small chance of becoming a tropical depression in the next two days but it has started bringing rains in eastern Mindanao,” said Estareja

He said the LPA is forecast to bring rains in more areas in Mindanao and parts of the Visayas starting today.

Estareja said the entire Caraga region and the province of Davao Oriental are the areas that are expected to be most affected by light to moderate with at time heavy rains.

He said residents of these areas should be on alert for floods and landslides.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the effects of low pressure areas, northeast monsoon and shear line since the start of the year has led to the death of 48 people as of last February 5.

The NDRRMC also said 2,143,347 families or 519,781 persons were affected in 14 regions.

It said a total of 138,986 families or 570,961 persons were displaced though the number is down to 4,454 families or 9,725 as of February 5.
