A LOW pressure area (LPA) east of northern Luzon developed yesterday into a tropical depression and was named “Domeng,” the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
It may exit the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Saturday morning or afternoon, the weather agency said.
Domeng, which intensified into a tropical depression at around 2 p.m., was last reported to be some 930 km east of extreme northern Luzon, PAGASA said
in a bulletin issued at 5 p.m. yesterday.
It was packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kph near the center, gustiness of up to 55 kph and was moving northwestward at 15 kph.
It is forecast “to gradually accelerate north northwestward over the next three days and remain far from the Philippine landmass,” PAGASA said.
“Outside the PAR region, the tropical cyclone is forecast to pass very close or make landfall in the vicinity of the Ryukyu Islands (in Japan) on Saturday evening or Sunday morning,” PAGASA said.
Meanwhile, tropical depression “Caloy” exited the PAR on Wednesday night.
PAGASA said Caloy left PAR at around 11 p.m. and later developed into a tropical storm with international name “Chaba.”
Caloy intensified into a tropical depression, from low pressure area, on Tuesday night but did not make landfall.
Caloy will move “slowly north northwestward on Sunday and Monday towards the southern portion of China, where it is forecast to make landfall,” PAGASA said,
PAGASA also said monsoon trough and the southwest monsoon, enhanced by Caloy and Domeng, will bring monsoon rains in western sections of central and southern Luzon.
