THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) yesterday lifted the tropical cyclone wind signal raised over Batanes as typhoon “Liwayway” continued to make its way out of the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR).

Liwayway is expected to be out today but a low pressure area was spotted some 860 km east northeast of Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur.

PAGASA said despite Liwayway’s expected exit, “occasional gusty conditions” may still be experienced in Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Zambales, and Bataan due to the southwest monsoon.

It also said trough of Liwayway and the southwest monsoon will continue to bring light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains to Batanes and Babuyan Islands and Ilocos provinces until Friday.

It alerted people in these areas, especially those in flood- and landslide-prone communities, to continue taking precautionary measures.

As of 3 p.m. yesterday, Liwayway was some 420 km northeast of Basco in Batanes, moving northeast at 10 kph and packing maximum sustained winds of 140 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 170 kph.

PAGASA said the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, and Cagayan Valley Region will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the southwest monsoon.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said 32 areas in Central Luzon were flooded due to rains induced from Liwayway.
