NINE senior police and military officials have been recommended to President Duterte to succeed PNP chief Guillermo Eleazar and AFP chief Gen. Jose Faustino, who are due to retire this Saturday and Friday, respectively.

Interior Secretary and concurrent National Police Commission Chairman Eduardo Año said he submitted to the President last Tuesday a list of five PNP officials to be the next PNP chief.

“It’s based on seniority, merit and service reputation,” Año said, without naming the five contenders for the top PNP post.

He said the five have ranks of lieutenant general, major general and brigadier general.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said he submitted to the President a list of four military officials to succeed Faustino.

“The President also has the discretion to select anyone, among the current PNP generals who are not even in the list,” said Año, adding the President may inform him of his choice next week.

“We’re going to talk again during our next meeting, probably November 8. By that time, I suppose the President will already have a decision. He’s having difficulty making the choice,” said Año.

Año said it would be up to the President if the incoming PNP chief would be the last official he would appoint to the top PNP post.

“That depends on him, it could be the last or he can appoint another. That really depends on him, that is his option,” said Año.
