VICE President Leni Robredo is ready to throw her hat in the presidential ring in next year’s national elections.
In a press statement released early evening yesterday, Robredo said seeking the highest post in the country would be her “default” choice after her stint as vice president.
“[H]aving said that na mas priority ko iyong lokal, alam kong may obligasyon ako sa national… Alam ko na maraming naghihikayat sa akin, iyong mga kakampi at least naghihikayat sa akin mag-presidente. So, parating iyon pa rin iyong default (Having said that my priority is still running for a local position, I know what I have an obligation to the nation… My allies and several support groups have been asking me to run for president. I think that would be my default next step),” Robredo said in an interview with GMA News at the Jesse M. Robredo Foundation Museum in Naga City on Saturday.
She said she would run where she feels she would be more needed. Robredo was a former Camarines Sur representative before she won the vice presidency in 2016.
The Vice President said the soonest time that she could make her final decision would be in September. “The circumstances today could be different in June. So for me, the earliest I could possibly decide would be in September, just before filing. As of today, I am open to anything,” she said.
Robredo assured all her supporters that she was weighing the decision very carefully, and that what would be best for all would be her foremost consideration.
Robredo visited Camarines Sur last Friday to visit the site of her office’s second BAHAYanihan initiative in Lupi town, which aims to build houses for families who were affected by the recent typhoons. On Saturday, she met with members of Naga City People’s Council (NCPC), which was formed during the term of her husband late Jesse Robredo to give voice to basic sectors, to assess the priorities and plans of the council.
