OPERATIVES of the PNP Anti-Kidnapping Group rescued a South Korean and arrested one of his kidnappers in Malate, Manila on Tuesday, police said yesterday.
AKG chief Brig. Gen. Jonnel Estomo said the operation was conducted based on information provided by Korean police assigned with the Korean Embassy in Manila.
Estomo said the victim, Kim Byeong Mo, 19, arrived in Manila on Sunday afternoon. Mo said he was offered a job in the Philippines by a college student, who is his senior, in Korea. It turned out the offer was a fraud.
Estomo said the victim was welcomed in the Philippines by three Koreans, including the arrested suspect who was identified as Na Jin Suk. He said the suspects also seized the victim’s phone and passport.
Estomo said the victim still managed to call his mother to inform her of his supposed work in the Philippines. “When they found out that the victim was calling his mother, they held the victim captive in a room,” said Estomo.
The mother reported the matter to Korean authorities, leading the Korean embassy to coordinate the matter with the AKG on Monday afternoon.
