PRESIDENT Marcos Jr. declared July 9, Saturday, a regular holiday in the country in observance of Muslim holiday Eid’l Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice.
Proclamation No. 2 signed on July 5 was issued following the recommendation of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos to declare July 9 a holiday based on the Islamic lunar calendar and moon sighting.
“The observance of Eid’l Adha shall be subject to the public health measures of the national government,” the proclamation order also said.
Eid’l Adha is one of the two major Muslim holidays that is celebrated as a regular holiday in the Philippines.
Samira Gutoc, former member of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Regional Legislative Assembly, said at the “Laging Handa” public briefing that Eid al-Adha signifies the willingness of the prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail after being asked by Allah. — Jocelyn Montemayor
