A MAN who allegedly violated the Revised Optometry Law of 1985 was arrested by the NBI on Tuesday in his house in Eastwood, Quezon City.
Francis Leo Marcos was described by the NBI as a businessman and an online personality.
NBI Cybercrime Division Chief Vic Lorenzo said Marcos was arrested based on a warrant issued by Baguio City RTC Branch 60 Judge Ligaya Itliong-Rivera in February 2018 for alleged violation of RA 8050, by distributing of eyeglasses without approval from Philippine Association of Optometrists. He declined to give details.
The bail was set at P20,000.
Marcos said several optical clinics in Baguio filed the case against him because their earnings had been affected by his distribution of the free eyeglasses during his medical missions.
Lorenzo said the NBI also received information that Marcos is facing a case for qualified human trafficking before a Manila court as well as a complaint for violence against women filed before a court in Gapan, Nueva Ecija. He also said Marcos has pending estafa complaints.
Lorenzo said Marcos could also face charges for violation of the Passport Law since he has had passports with different names.
“We are also looking if he violated the Bayanihan We Heal As One Act with his social media posts, particularly on fake news,” he added.
Marcos became known online for his “Mayaman Challenge” wherein he urges neighbors in his affluent Quezon City neighborhood to give aid to the needy amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
His official YouTube page says he has over a million followers, while several Facebook pages and support groups under his name have tens of thousands of subscribers.
