WILL Smith homered, Julio Urias tossed seven-plus innings of one-run ball, and the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 4-2 on Sunday (Monday in Manila) in Denver.
Los Angeles only had four hits but benefited from the longest start of Urias’ career. Urias (1-0) allowed one run on three hits, struck out six and walked just one before Ryan McMahon’s single leading off the eighth ended his day.
Corey Knebel pitched the ninth for his first save.
Garrett Hampson had a two-run double for Colorado. Starter Austin Gomber (0-1), acquired from St. Louis in the trade that sent Nolan Arenado to the Cardinals, struggled in his Rockies debut, and lasted just three innings. He had one of Colorado’s four hits.
The Dodgers didn’t get a hit until Zach McKinstry led off the second with a double but had a 3-0 lead after their first turn at bat.
In other games, it was the Angels 7, White Sox 4; Astros 9, Athletics 2; Orioles 11, Red Sox 3; Phillies 2, Braves 1; Blue Jays 3, Yankees 1; Indians 9, Tigers 3; Rangers 7, Royals 3; Cubs 4, Pirates 3; Reds 12, Cardinals 1; Twins 8, Brewers 2; and Diamondbacks 3, Padres 1.
Angels 7, White Sox 4
Shohei Ohtani homered at the plate and struck out seven on the mound in 4 2/3 innings, but Jared Walsh stole the show in the Los Angeles Angels’ victory over the Chicago White Sox.
Walsh homered twice, including a three-run walk-off shot in the bottom of the ninth off White Sox reliever Matt Foster that gave Los Angeles three wins in the season-opening four-game series against the White Sox.
Walsh, who also hit a solo home run in the fifth inning, was a two-way player himself at the major league level, pitching in relief in five games in 2019, compiling a 1.80 ERA.
Astros 9, Athletics 2
Kyle Tucker hit the 10th pitch of the game for a home run and Chas McCormick went deep for the first time in his budding career as visiting Houston completed a four-game sweep of Oakland in dominant fashion.
Jason Castro celebrated a homecoming with a homer of his own, helping put a capper on the dominant season-opening series in which the Astros outscored the defending American League West champs 35-9, winning each game by at least four runs.
