FOR the second straight day, less than 2,000 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases were reported by the Department of Health but 239 more succumbed to the deadly virus as the death toll surged toward the grim mark of 44,000.

In its latest bulletin, the DOH said total infections in the country rose to 2,795,642 counting the 1,766 new cases yesterday. Last Wednesday, 1,591 new cases were reported, the lowest in the country since last February.

However, the DOH said the new cases do not include figures from two laboratories that failed to submit data last November 2.
