INFANTA, Quezon Mayor Grace America, who is running for reelection, was injured when she was shot by a lone gunman shortly after hearing mass before noon yesterday.
America was brought to a hospital in Infanta and later transferred to a hospital in Metro Manila for treatment of her injuries, according to Quezon provincial police director Col. Joel Villanueva.
“She is in stable condition. She is now confined in Manila, she was airlifted (to Metro Manila),” Villanueva said in a phone interview yesterday.
America is seeking another term as Infanta mayor in the May elections, under the Nacionalista Party. She is up against Eriberto Escueta of the Nationalist People’s Coalition and Ednon Verano, who is running as an independent.
In a statement, the Infanta municipal government condemned the attack. It also encouraged anyone who witnessed the attack to coordinate with the police to hasten the arrest of the suspect or suspects.
Villanueva said America had just boarded her vehicle, a Chevrolet Trailblazer, when she was shot by the lone gunman in Rizal St., Poblacion 1 in Infanta town at around 11:15 a.m. He said the vehicle’s driver, Alvin America, was not hurt.
