The mobile network improvements of the country’s telecommunication companies were recognized globally by independent analytics firm Opensignal.

OpenSignal said Smart Communications and Globe Telecoms have reached the category of “Global Rising Stars” for fourth generation (4G) availability and video experience, respectively, by showing scores above the global average between the first half of 2019 and the first half of 2020.

Opensignal said Smart won the 4G availability category as the average proportion of time that users on its network spent connected to 4G rose by 17.9 percent, an absolute increase of 13 percentage points between first half of 2019 and first half of 2020.

4G availability is defined as the proportion of time 4G users spend connected to 4G or Long Term Evolution.

Opensignal said Globe has been awarded as one of the most improved telco in video experience worldwide with an improvement score of 32.7 percent that signifies impressive gains with the worldwide average at 14 percent improvement.

It added users on Globe’s network saw their average download speeds improve by 24.5 percent between first half of 2019 and first half of 2020.

Opensignal defines the Global Rising Stars as “the top 30 operators where users have seen the greatest improvement in mobile network experience in the last year, between the first half of 2019 and the first half of 2020.”

The report, released in time for OpenSignal’s 10th anniversary, is based on over 403 billion measurements gathered from close to 96 million devices from January 1 to June 28, 2019 and 2020, and covers 180+ operators from over 50 countries.

“This citation is a testament to our commitment to improving the experience of our customers. As the country’s largest and only fully integrated telco, we will continue to invest in improving our network and our services, and we will benchmark our performance against countries like Vietnam and Thailand to be better. I think every Filipino deserves that kind of service,” said Alfredo Panlilio, Smart president and chief executive officer and PLDT Inc. chief revenue officer.

“As one of the Global Rising Stars recognized by Opensignal, Globe is proud to be a telco company that commits to improve data service to our subscribers. Expect more of these remarkable improvements as we continue with our aggressive efforts to upgrade the network for better connectivity and service,” said Gil Genio, Globe chief technology and information officer.
