PRESIDENT Marcos Jr. has declared August 13 this year until August 12 of next year as the Centennial Year of Manlilikha Ng Bayan Magdalena Gamayo in recognition of the contributions of Ilokana master weaver and National Living Treasure Magdalena Gamayo.
The President, through Proclamation No. 664 signed on August 12, said August 13, 2024 marks the centennial year or 100th birthday of Gamayo, the “oldest living Ilocano Master Weaver.”
Gamayo, who hails from Pinili, Ilocos Norte, was proclaimed a Manlilikha ng Bayan awardee in 2012 through Proclamation No. 474 for her mastery in producing intricate designs and inventing her own patterns of Ilocano Abel (inabel), and for her passion in keeping the traditional weaving industry alive.
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), through the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Executive Council, recommended the declaration of the Centennial Year of Magdalena Gamayo to promote genuine appreciation among Filipinos of the valuable and intangible cultural distinction of the Manlilikha ng Bayan.
