THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) yesterday welcomed the Senate’s ratification of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 190 (C190), saying it is a clear manifestation of the country’s commitment to safe and secure workplaces.
In a statement, DMW Officer-in-Charge Undersecretary Hans Leo Cacdac said the country’s ratification of the “Convention Concerning the Elimination of Violence and Harassment in the World of Work” is clear proof of how the Philippines looks after workers regardless of their employment location.
“This ratification underscores the Philippines’ unwavering commitment to promoting safe and decent work for all Filipinos,” said Cacdac.
“Ratification of ILO C190 strengthens and reaffirms the Philippines’ commitment to existing domestic labor laws,” he added.
The DMW chief said the adoption of C190 would greatly benefit OFWs as having such an international protocol will help ensure their protection abroad.
This, he said, includes the department’s ongoing efforts to establish bilateral labor agreements with different nations.
“For overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), who often face vulnerability to exploitation, discrimination, and abuse while working abroad, ILO C190 holds particular significance,” he said.
“The Philippines can leverage ILO C190 to provide OFWs with enhanced protection, respecting the dignity of their work,” added Cacdac.
Last Monday, the Senate voted unanimously 20-0 to pass on third and final reading Resolution No. 877 which ratifies ILO C190.
To date, ILO C190, which came into effect back on June 25, 2021, has been ratified by 36 countries.
