SEN. Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada has filed a bill seeking to increase by as much as 488 percent the monthly disability pensions of military veterans.

Estrada said the current monthly disability pension of military veterans ranging from P1,000 to P1,700 is not even enough to buy their maintenance medicines and other needs.

Under Senate Bill No. 683, Estrada proposes that the monthly disability pension be increased from 350 percent to as high as P488 percent since the present disability monthly pension for military veterans “are no longer realistic given the rising cost of daily expenses.”

“It is the intention of this measure to support our veterans by increasing the disability pension to cover, among others, medical and hospitalization expenses, the economic and social ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the increase in the prices of oil, food, and other consumer goods,” Estrada said.

Existing provisions of RA 6948, or the Act Standardizing and Upgrading the Benefits for Military Veterans and their Dependents, says that veterans who were disabled due to sickness, disease, wounds or injuries sustained in the line of duty are given a monthly disability pension that ranges from P1,000 to P1,700.

Under Estrada’s proposed measure the monthly pension will be between P4,500 to P10,000.

Estrada is the chairman of the Senate committee on national defense and security.
