He wants his own ‘legacy’

TWO weeks after taking over as PNP chief, Gen. Camilo Cascolan yesterday said it will be “good” if President Duterte extends his term beyond November when he reaches the retirement age of 56.

“I don’t want to assume. Ayaw kong pangunahan ang (I don’t want to preempt the) President but of course if I am extended it would be a good one for me,” Cascolan said in a television interview, adding this will enable him to leave his “legacy” in the 209,000-strong police force.

Cascolan is due to retire from the service on November 10, less than two months from now.

“(If extended) I would be able to at least leave to the PNP a legacy that they (policemen) have to follow and is of course something that is very important for this organization,” said Cascolan.

“We love this organization and I’ve lived here and I have been in the field for so many years. I want to set it right,” Cascolan added.

Cascolan is the fourth PNP chief to serve under the Duterte administration. One of them, now Sen. Ronald Dela Rosa, was given a three-month extension by the President.

Cascolan said there is no legal impediment for the President to extend the term of a PNP chief.

“The President could extend the chief PNP for at least one year, for a year I mean,” said Cascolan, one of the authors of Oplan Double Barrel, the PNP’s campaign plan against illegal drugs.

Among the potential successors of Cascolan if he retires on November 10 are PNP deputy chief for administration Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar and PNP deputy chief for operations Lt. Gen. Cesar Hawthorne Binag. — Victor Reyes
