THE Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) yesterday said it has yet to establish the identity of those behind the hacking of its official Facebook (FB) page which it uses in disseminating information to the public.
During the “Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon” public briefing, PCG spokesman Rear Admiral Armando Balilo also said they have no hard evidence link the hacking to PCG’s intensified efforts to safeguard Philippine interest in the West Philippine Sea in the South China Sea.
China has become aggressive in its claims over the West Philippine Sea. It has harassed Philippine government vessels and Filipino boats at Ayungin Shoal and Scarborough Shoal in the past months.
“We still have no strong evidence as to who did this… As of now, we’re really having difficulty in determining who has control over our Facebook,” said Balilo.
The “unknown entity” gained control of the PCG’s FB page on Monday night. As of yesterday afternoon, the hacker or hackers posted 13 movie clips on the agency’s social media page.
Asked if the hacking has something to do with the PCG’s mission in the West Philippine Sea, Balilo said, “We have no strong evidence to make such conclusion.”
“It will be better if we wait for the result of the ongoing investigation and hopefully we can pinpoint who did this to Philippine Coast Guard,” he said.
The PCG earlier said it has already coordinated with Meta, Facebook’s parent company, and “provided needed details to regain page access.”
