SEN. Sherwin Gatchalian said a check with the Bureau of Immigrations showed that suspended Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Leal Guo has no record of leaving the country as of yesterday.

Gatchalian, in an ambush interview, said Guo is believed to be still in the country unless she has found a way to escape by any other illegal means.

Gatchalian said it was only his “theory” that Guo may have left the country using her Chinese passport, which she had been using from 2008 to 2011. Having a Chinese passport means Guo is a Chinese citizen.

Guo has been unmasked as a Chinese citizen masquerading as a Filipino by the National Bureau of Investigation.

“Based on records of the Bureau of Immigration, she is still here,” he said, adding Guo would have a hard time hiding since her presence would be tipped off to authorities once she was seen in public.

Gatchalian urged Guo to surrender and respect the legal process, saying the warrant of arrest issued against does not mean that she would be indefinitely detained.

“This is in aid of legislation. This (Senate) is not a court. Our decision (to detain her) is a legislative proposal. This is not an order that she will be permanently jailed. So, she better give her testimony and tell us what she knows. Again, this is in aid of legislation,” he said.

He said when she surrenders, Guo is allowed to bring her legal team so she can be advised on what to do during the hearing proper.

“If she does not want to speak, she can do that. What’s important is that she respects the institution, she respects the process. And the most important is that we can identify the people behind these illegal POGOs),” he said.
