JUSTICE Secretary Menardo Guevarra yesterday said he has directed Justice Undersecretary Deo Marco to come up with recommendations to prevent a repeat of the riot at the New Bilibid Prison Sunday night that left three inmates dead and 14 others injured.

Guevarra issued the directive even as the investigation being conducted by the Bureau of Correction has yet to be concluded.

“Upon my directive, Usec Deo Marco will submit his report on the incident with recommended courses of action within the week,” Guevarra said.

BuCor spokesman Gabriel Chaclag had earlier said that seven inmates believed to have major roles in the riot have been identified and taken to an isolation area for further investigation.

After several violent clashes between rival gangs in 2020 and 2021 that left several inmates dead and injured, the BuCor intensified its drive to rid the national penitentiary of improvised weapons.

The bureau also started removing the tattoos of inmates showing their gang affiliations.
