ELECTIONS Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said she sees a “veiled impeachment threat” from House lawmakers who recently filed a resolution asking the Commission on Elections to issue certificates of proclamation to nominees of the party-list groups Senior Citizens and Duterte Youth.
In her Twitter account (@commrguanzon), Guanzon said she believes some House members are “subtly” threatening Comelec members by accusing them of “violating the Constitution.”
“It seems they have a plan to get us impeached or are threatening to impeach us,” said Guanzon.
“That resolution that was filed but not adopted by the HOR (House of Representatives) is a veiled threat to impeach us,” she added.
She was referring to House Resolution No. 552 filed by Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano and other House leaders “respectfully urging” the poll body to issue the certificates of proclamation to the respective first nominees of the two party-list groups.
The lawmakers said the “prolonged or more than six months unresolved and undecided cases evidently deny due process to the parties,” including the Filipinos who voted for the party-list groups.
Guanzon said the House members, instead of meddling with the Comelec’s work, should just respect the independence of the commission.
“Don’t accost us. Don’t tell us how to do our jobs. We know better,” she said.
“I would advise those congressmen to keep their urges to themselves. The @COMELEC is a constitutional commission, whose independence is protected by the Constitution,” added Guanzon.
