ALTHOUGH they are not potential beneficiaries, government employees are in full support of the proposed legislated wage hike for private sector workers currently pending in Congress.

In a statement, the Public Services Labor Independent Confederation (PSLINK) said they are backing the push of their counterparts in the private sector for an increase in their minimum wage rates.

“We, in the PSLINK, express our full support for the passage of the proposed national minimum wage hike for private sector workers,” said PSLINK.

“Legislating a national minimum wage increase will contribute to reducing wage inequality,” it added.

The group admitted their sector could also have something to gain if the legislated pay hike for private sector workers is approved.

PSLINK said this is because seeing an upward adjustment in the salary of private workers may force lawmakers to do the same for the public sector.

“Increasing the national minimum wage for private sector workers will create the necessary pressure for the government to adjust existing salary grades in the public sector,” it said.

“Increasing the national minimum wage for private sector workers will compel the current administration to take immediate actions to finally address the issue of unfair compensation of all government workers,” added PSLINK.

Earlier, the Senate approved a measure setting a P100 daily minimum wage hike for private sector workers.

On the other hand, the House of Representatives has started hearing several bills seeking across-the-board wage increases for workers in the private sector.
