GILAS Pilipinas’ preparations for two coming international tournaments have been mothballed anew.

The nationals are set to break camp after the government reverted Metro Manila, along with Bulacan, Cavite, Rizal, and Laguna, where the Philippine five is encamped at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, to the strictest enhanced community quarantine yesterday.

The Philippine Sports Commission has ordered NSAs within affected areas to halt their training due to the surge in COVID-19 infections and a cloud of uncertainties.

The ECQ is until Easter Sunday, April 4, but there’s a possibility it might be extended.

“In this light, all National Sports Associations (NSAs) are hereby advised that all indoor and outdoor training of all national team members within the affected areas are hereby temporarily suspended. The NSAs are encouraged to practice on-line individual training and no group activities shall be conducted,” the PSC said in an advisory last Sunday.

“Further, all national training pool members must ensure proper compliance with relevant precautionary measures of the DOH (Department of Health) and IATF (Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases) issued health and safety protocol at all times.”

Taekwondo jins and Tokyo Games hopefuls Kirstie Alora, Pauline Lopez, Kurt Barbosa, Arven Alcantara, Joseph Chua, Samuel Morrison, Jessica Canabal, and Laila Delo, who are also training in Laguna, are also set to pack their bags and return home.

The all-amateur Philippine five is toughening up for the third window of the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers tentatively set from June 14 to 20 in Clark.

Gilas will also try to clinch a Tokyo Games slot in the Olympic qualifying tournament from June 29 to July 4 in Belgrade, Serbia.
