THE Dangerous Drugs Board has classified Gamma-Butyrolactone or GBL, better known in the country as a “date-rape drug,” as a dangerous drug, according to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.

GBL can cause sleepiness, confusion, and dizziness, making a person vulnerable to sexual assault.

PDEA chief Aaron Aquino said the inclusion of GBL in the list of dangerous drugs was approved by the Dangerous Drugs Board last June.

Aquino said GBL is a liquid compound used as a solvent and sometimes taken as a recreational drug that has high potential for abuse which may lead to severe psychological and physical dependence.

“This is another leap in our pursuit to regulate the manufacture, sale and illicit use of this substance that may lead to addiction,” Aquino said, adding the new directive will minimize the importation, exportation manufacture, sale, and use of GBL since other countries like the United States, Australia, Canada, Netherlands, Sweden, United Kingdom, Italy and Hong Kong have also regulated this substance.

During the destruction of dangerous drugs by PDEA last July in Trece Martires City, Cavite, a total of 1,126.20 milliliters of gamma-butyrolactone were burned through thermal decomposition.

Meanwhile, police recovered about 15 kilos of marijuana with a street value of P300,000 during a buy-bust operation in Antipolo City on Wednesday.

Col. Renato S. Alba, Rizal PNP provincial director, said four suspected pushers, including a 16-year-old boy, were nabbed during the operation. He identified three of them as Raffy Camacho, 18; Joseph Degala, 23; and Kurt Dimaala, 21.

Two other suspected pushers were also nabbed in Taytay, Rizal on Wednesday and suspected shabu worth at least P115,000 seized.
